Role of the Form Tutor
Most members of the academic staff will also have the added responsibility of being a form tutor
The tutor system is central to the academic monitoring and pastoral care of all pathways students in the middle and secondary schools. The tutor is the first point of contact for both the student and his or her parent for information concerning academic progress and wellbeing or for solving problems that might arise in the student’s life. The tutor should also celebrate the student’s successes and communicate these to the parent. It is important that the tutor get to know all his/her tutees well in order to help and guide them.
Opportunities to meet the group in structured time happen daily at registration and during tutor periods, at community service and during PSHE lessons. Tutors should also arrange to meet their tutees individually at least once a month.
Your role is to act as a friend, philosopher and guide to your tutees
 You are responsible for the performance and growth of every tutee physically, emotionally, educationally, spiritually, and socially
 You are the first point of contact with the parents and the school expects you to be proactive in this regard.
 Send informal monthly reports to parents outlining the tutees performance both positive and negative. Where there are problems you need to mention what the school is doing to solve the problem
 Check the tutees diaries daily for liaison with other teachers regarding prep and other academic matters
 Consult regularly with your tutees’ house parents as they interact with the students in a totally different way. You will learn about another side of your tutees.
 Find out if your tutee needs any extra help in EAL, SEN or subject area and arrange the same
 Ensure tutees have all the required texts and stationary, uniforms and other receivables
 Accompany your group on the class trip week activity
 Deliver the PSHE lesson each week under the guidance of the PSHE coordinator
 Prepare suitable activities for the tutor period; these may include discussions on topics of interest to the group, problem solving, resolving issues, checking books and equipment, preparing assemblies and any other.
 Escort and sit with your group at the assembly to ensure good behaviour
 Check the appearance of your tutees every morning to see that they are wearing the uniform correctly and are neatly turned out and complying with school rules.
