• Know and work based upon Colombian Curriculum Standards as well as PYP / MYP curriculum and methodology.
• Be a model to all students of the IB profile: inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, well-balanced, reflective.
• Work as a team to plan and design unit of inquiry and activities to fulfill the Study Plans of the grade. Collaborative planning is a big part of the job.
• Teach the main subject matters (Homeroom teachers): Language Arts English, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics and Ethics. This may vary depending on the grade you will be teaching.
• Know how each one of your students learn and establish teaching strategies to reach all of them when planning all your classes and evaluating their learning.
• One-on-one tutoring when necessary.
• Maintain up to date the planning, attendance and grade platform.
• Use technological tools to complement your teaching.
• Attend conferences, activities or workshops that the school decides are important.
• Evaluate constantly students’ academic, social, discipline progress and struggles.
• Prepare the students´ progress reports.
• Meet with parents, school directives and co-workers to discuss students’ progress.

Other Duties: Monitoring Lunch and Break.
Bus duties
We are in the process of adapting to the methodology for PYP and MYP (IB Program) and working with units of inquiry. Even if we have text books, we encourage using them only as a reference (as well as other resources you may find that are useful at working with our students in developing skills and competences) so being resourceful and creative is a big part of the job.
The students work with the homeroom teacher in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science Social Studies and Ethics. This would be your role (for Little School and Primary). They do have Spanish Language Arts, Dance, Drama, Art, Technology and Physical Education with different teachers. As a homeroom teacher, you are responsible for communicating with parents and with teachers to discuss students´ progress or difficulties. The homeroom teacher plays the most important role in the academic, social, and disciplinary guidance and follow up of students.
For middle school teachers, teachers would teach different groups of students and are responsible for that particular area. You would have to work and maintain constant communication with the homeroom teachers to keep them updated with each kid´s progress. In any case, you are required to work as part of a team and interdisciplinary projects are encouraged.
There are after-school activities for those teachers who want to develop an activity- or special class. You would get paid extra for those activities and there is a special coordinator for these activities.
Parents are involved in many ways: we have a platform where they can check their kid’s assignments and grades on line. We expect parents´ attendance at least 4 times during the year (open house and 3 report meetings), and every time the homeroom teacher or the coordinator decide it is important to meet with them.
We believe that education is a process that involves parents and teachers and we try to work with parents as a team; this is a very important part of being a teacher at LPV. As in every school, we have concerned parents, we have stressed parents, we have full participants and unfortunately we also have parents that do not participate as much as we want, we will help you with those cases.

Homeroom teacher
Colombia (Pereira)

Fields of Expertise: Elementary , Kindergarten , High School , Technology from Elementary to Highschool
Details: Liceo Pino Verde: an excellent choice to teach abroad
If you decided you want to teach abroad, chances are Colombia would not be at the
top of your list. The first thing most foreigns think when they hear the word
“Colombia“ is drugs and violence.
This may have been true many years ago but this country has come a long way since
then and it has become a much safer place. Although the situation and security is
not perfect (is it anywhere?), Colombians and visitors now feel confident to go out
and travel safely by car all over the country. Nowadays, when safety is not longer a
matter, Colombia is an excellent option for foreign teachers to work: the only risk is
wanting to stay (check out Colombia is passion website).
Now, the second most famous thing Colombia is known for is its coffee. Right in the
middle of the Colombian coffee zone, there is a wonderful and gorgeous private
bilingual school called Liceo Pino Verde (LPV). Pereira, the city where the school is
located, has nice weather all year round (between 70° and 80°), welcoming people
always willing to help and beautiful sites nearby. LPV is in excellent working option for
foreign teachers who are interested in teaching abroad. This school has a great
location, an amazing working environment, an architecture you will love, and a
comprehensive compensation package adapted to Pereira’s life.
To begin with, LPV has a remarkable location. Pereira is the most important city of
the coffee triangle. People can travel easily by bus, car or airplane to all the most
beautiful and interesting places in Colombia. In the words of Lindsey P., one of our
American teachers, “Pereira is a perfect city to work in as an American. It is not too
big and it is not too little… It has a great night life, it is an easy city to learn and get
around, the people are very friendly, and there are great day trips to places like
natural hot springs and precious little pueblos like Salento.“ It does not matter what
you like, you can always find something fun to do: whether it is going out to eat,
clubbing, visiting snowcapped mountains or swimming in natural hot springs.
Tourists and visitors do not need to expend large amounts of money in order to do
what they like and living expenses are not very high. There are plenty of apartments
available for rent at incredible low prices compared to the U.S. Urban transportation
includes Megabus ($75c) and taxis (about $2 to $6 per ride). The area has an
international airport.
About the school
Liceo Pino Verde is a private bilingual school with high academic standards and a
humanist approach to education. Kids are accepted when they are 3 years old and
the school offers all the grades through 11th grade, which is the last year in
Colombian education. From K4 to 5th grade, students are in an English immersion
program. Math, Social Studies, Science and Language Arts, which sums almost 70%
of all classes, are taught in English.
Most teachers working at LPV are Colombians who have learned English fluently. By
the time students go into third grade, they have acquired English skills and need to
work with their fluency and pronunciation. Because of this, LPV is always interested
in hiring native speakers qualified to teach 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.
The architecture of the school is outstanding: all classrooms are open-air and made
of “guadua“ (large form of bamboo). There are plenty of green areas, a swimming
pool, a labyrinth and a “wild“ tropical trail surrounding the school. That is just perfect
to take the students for hands-on science experiences!!
Classes start in January and finish in early December. Teachers have approximately
20-25 teaching hours a week and plenty of time to plan and grade during school.
Students from 3rd grade on start classes at 7:00 a.m. and finish at 3:10 p.m. Little
ones have a shorter schedule:
8:15 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Concerning vacation, LPV has the entire Holy Week off, as
well as the last week of September. Teachers have a break in June/July that could
be 2 or 3 weeks long and 1 month at the end of the school year. Colombia also has
many three-day weekends because of religious and national holidays.
From all the wonderful things this school has, all American teachers agree on this: its
biggest asset is the teaching and working staff. They are really passionate about
their work and treat each other like family. They will do everything in their power to
make you feel welcome and make adaptation easier. Everybody is very close,
friendly and supportive.
