Anyone experience any discrimination, in terms of race in apply for positions? I am trying to get some jobs in Brazil, Taiwan and so on, and a few friends are telling me that its quite the ¨status quo to hire someone with a white face¨.

Just want some feedback, because although it is apparent in America I am interested in knowing how bad it is outside the states. I´d like to get as much feedback from anyone, regardless of your race.

Thanks,
David

Well, here is first hand proof of the bs that some schools put us (other) Americans on , if your not white, don´t bother applying.... and yet they want to come to our country so bad... But then wait, we do the same.

David ill talk to you strait on this so please dont
think im odd....because you have darker
skin...Hawiaii...Phillipino..Mexico...just trying to
peg it....hehe......some of the owners are gonna pass
on you here......it´r a kinda of stupid prejudice they
have that only ´white´ people can speak proper
English.

Now I have to turn down people every month cause they
are from the Phillipines or India or Bahamas....but
you are American so some of the schools are gonna say
OK.....it may take me a bit longer to get it set up is
all.

Dear David
I have been teaching for 2years in China. I am African American
and rule here is if your white your allright if your brown stick around
and if your black go back. While it is not the same kind race hatred
we see sometimes in the states there is a definate prefernce for Young
White faces not matter how inexperinced of drunk or stupid!!!!!!!
Much Love

In a way i think maybe it´s better they want you to post a picture, because if they are going to discriminate against you about the color of your skin, they can just simply not contact you. It´s better than going there and they don´t know you´re a person of color and then you have a terrible experience. I find that before people see a picture of me i get lots of interest based on my experience but when i send my pic they "change their mind" it´s really sad.

I taught in Korea for nearly 5 years, and there they are pretty racist against blacks. I hate to say, this is due to the behavior of the GI´s rather than teachers. You might run into some trouble getting hired there, but if you get hired, it shoudn´t be a problem once you start work and show your talents.

yeah, a white face is preferred in most of asia...it´s a business thing and it´s horrible...maybe some countries are better than others. I´ve noticed from my friends´ experience sin taiwan that you can still find a job and good pay, you just need to find the right school and your job hunt may take longer to get the pay you desire...good luck wherever you go

Could someone of color (or Not) tell mehow important being white is to getting an overseas ESL position? I have more than enough qualifications for almost anything that comes my way. Yet I feel that I´m not getting the better offers because I am a black American. What gives with that and where should I apply? Or is this a case of "just stay where you are?
