Teaching in Oman: Has anyone ever taught in Oman? I am considering it but admit that I am
ignorant to the teaching conditions there. I´m a 24 year old single female and don´t know if it´s a
good place to be single foreigner. Any advice is great appreciated!

I am about to head out to UAE (thanks seriousteachers.com ;-) ), and although I have no first-hand experience with working in the ME yet, I found a wealth of info from other teachers at another forum (I don´t know if it´s ok to post the name here?).
General consensus is that the Gulf States are safe, and that as long as you respect local ´ways´, you should be totally fine as a single female. Teaching conditions vary greatly depending on who you work for, so selecting a right employer is crucial. Also, it sounds like ´making waves´ is just not ok, and as long as you march to the administration´s drummer, you´d be fine.
As for Oman specifically, the pay tends to be lower than some gulf states, but life is cheaper as well, and you might have a bit more relaxed lifestyle (i.e. KSA pays much better, but it´s also more expensive, life´s harsher and as a woman, you can´t drive, among other things)
It really depends on what you´re looking for and what your qualifications and experiences are. If you´re looking to save a whole lot while partying it up, Oman´s most likely not going to do. But if you´re looking to live comfortably while working in your field, you´d probably do ok :-)

Christina,

Oman is a lovely country, very safe for people and especially single women. Watch out for the kind of jobs offered and the amenities that go with it. More and more schools and colleges are trying to reduce these. The amenities are very important especially now as the cost of living has increased a great deal in the last year. Rents have doubled or tripled in just the last six months. Health care is very important and several schools and colleges ´say´ you have health care, but this could be with a small, inadequate clinic. So, make sure the salary is good, and the amenities are there. Otherwise, it could be a shock.

Christina...I had a 3-year contract working for the Higher Colleges of Technology in the United Arab Emirates and it was a great experience. Had wife and daugter, they enjoyed it also. The only suggestion I would have is how you dress in public. BE MODEST! My daugter was spit upon by a local guy because she was wearing shorts! Oman is a little more expensive than the UAE so make sure everything is spelled out and very clear in your contract .

Christina, this is John Vance. I have been in Oman since January of this year, and it is by far my favourite appointment in Asia (I have also been in Thailand and South Korea). I feel that I am treated like a king. The students here at our college are polite, keen, funny and loving. The flat provided by our agency is brand new and just across the road from the college. Hawthorn English is a first rate agency to work for, and they had an ad on this site for teachers wanted NOW. Do it. This is a beautiful and safe country.

Hi Christina,
Just wondering if you ended up going o Oman? I´m thinking about going there and just wondering how your experience is going. I´m a little worried about how conservative it might be for women.
