I have been living in Turkey for four years and Ankara for two of those. I have no idea why anyone would want to live in that city and can tell you truthfully that with the cetificate you have you will only be able to work in language schools called ´Dersane´. Though many of these are legitimate you cannot get a decent wage nor insurance for working there. I have never heard of any of these schools offering a Work Visa either. You must already have one through marriage to a Turkish Citizen or choose to work illegally. I do not reccommend either!
Ankara is land locked and the military presence is everywhere. It is unnerving to walk home and have a soldier holding an automatic weapon in his arms and following you with his eyes. Women have a difficult time here in Turkey and particularly single ones. If you are young and beautiful and foreign it is automatically assumed that you are for sale. I was dragged through a noontime crowd when I went out to lunch alone one day by a man who tried to get me into a parking lot to have ´a go´ with me. It was terrifying.
One night after having a row with my husband I took a short walk around my neighbourhood to cool off. On the way I stopped at a small shop and bought a bottle of the local liquor. Moments later a police van pulled up and pushed me inside. I do not speak much Turkish but understand somewhat more than I can speak. When I asked them where they were taking me they told me ´to a hotel´. ´But I want to go home to my husband!´ I said panic edging my voice. Fortunately I had my U.S. Passport on me that night though normally I do not carry it as it is dangerous if one is robbed or loses it. They are worth around twenty thousand dollars on the black market here. But once the two officers saw my passport they apologised profusely and drove me the few blocks back to my flat.
At the next opportunity I asked my husband to go to the small market and tell them what happened. It turned out that the owner had called the police because a ´foreign woman´ had bought liquor alone after dark.

I am very pleased to inform you that with your TESOL certificate in Teaching English to children and Adults, you could work in the Sultanate of Oman. It is a very safe place. People are also very nice and helpful. I have been working here for about three years. I have never encountered problems. In fact, I know many friends from Australia and New Zealand working here.
