I´m going to China next week as I have a job offer in a place called Changsha, however, In order to keep my options open, I have applied to many schools and am happy to report, they all seem very keen to allow me to visit them.
As this is my first teaching experience in China, I feel I should make the effort to get to know the area, school and culture before I sign my life away.
As you say, race shouldn´t be an issue,but I will be interested to find out the general attitude in China and let you know.

I tried for awhile--although not in person--to try to get something to happen in Asia, particularly in China...I´ve had EFL experience, have a CELTA cert, and a B.A. from a good school...but as soon as I had to send in a photo the enthusiastic responses would come to a stand-still, so i kind of gave up...best of luck to you, though! let me know how it goes!

In the Chinese culture, the dark skinned peasant workers who grow all that rice that supports the country, are considered lazy and unemployable. I was appalled to learn this but it is their belief.

I had a black colleague but his contract was not renewed and his girlfriend´s family would not allow her to marry him.

There were two black men I met in Ganzhou from Timbuktu who were doing well, but they were businessmen, trading goods.

Good luck and don´t take it personally. Traditional values are very hard to change. It will take time.

Hi there, I´m a South African Indian and im browned skinned ( obviously) and ive been teaching in Asia for five years now. South Korea is now opening up to ppl with diplomas or who are currently registered at a university or have completed at least 2 years and the prejudice isnt bad here but its a bit on the bad side in Taiwan... so give it a shot in Korea ... best of luck...
