Only China. Does anyone have experience working at a university in China? Any recommendations? Which universities in China are considered the best? I am a US professor and teach Public Speaking and Digital Film Making. Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

I´m Jon Day and working at Luoyang Normal University in Henan Province. I don´t know about other universities.

Most foreign teachers here are teaching with an ESL certificate, so you are likely to be over-qualified and you will find the pay is abysmal. However, accommodation is provided on the campus and the pay is more than enough to buy clothes, food and pay the phone bill.

Expect 4,000RMB, which equates to around $560 per month. The university has kids on a 5 year program from 15 years old to 20. And the more usual 4 year program, with students starting around 18 or 19. You are expected to teach both. Class sizes range from 25 to 60 students. All of them are expected to have some English.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the information, Jon.

I have my summers off and am seriously considering for my family and I to spend my vacation in China. My wife is Chinese and we desire for our kids to learn Chinese as well. I really don´t want to just teach English, I prefer to teach Public Speaking and Digital Film Making. However, I am not having any requests or interest for my subjects. Thanks again and wish you the best.

Following on your interest to work in a quality (prestige?) university in China, I am curious to know what Universities did you discover. Just liek you I am very well qualified in my own areas of Business, IT and I have TESOL also for teaching English. I am particularly keen to teach to Adults at a College or University in Shanghai in any one of my areas. Do you have any info on this? Even a list of reputable Uni´s would be a start for me. THX

Hey Morris, Great question. I would not be able to differentiate between an Ivy League school and a homeschool in China. I have not recieved any offers yet. Wish you the best.

If you do a search for "top 10 universities in China", you will find a page that begins with: school in china tefl net (China TEFL Network) which lists the top 10. These are very difficult to get jobs in, but not if you have a Master´s Degree. Having worked in China for 3 years, I did teach Public Speaking, but only as a sideline to help the university with national competitions, and was not paid extra for it. I can´t comment on Digital Film Making but wish you luck.

Hi Moses,
I just seen your blog here, and have been reading some of the comments posted here by different people. I started reading some comments on the forum here, because I wanted to read some comments and find out about some schools in Korea and elesewhere.
As for your interest in some Universities in China, I have been teaching at two different Universities this past year and a half.
I taught at Jiangsu University in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province. It was a nice campus ... a big campus, and they had two foreign housing apartment buildings for the foreign teachers which also housed some German students.
I enjoyed my time there but like most public schools and universities in China, they don´t pay much. Ususally starting at 3800 - up 5000rmb. They treated the teachers okay and on time each month pretty much.
I have just finished teaching in Qingdao, in Shandong province this semester, at Qingdao Technical University. They only paid 3800rm but, they did provide an allowance for an apartment, which had to find on my own. There was no social gathering with any of the teachers there in Qingdao at this school, what a shame ! I only met two other foreign teachers while i was there, one was fired (he had a PHD) but the students complained they couldn´r understand his teaching. (these were computer major students), my students also. I was teaching IELTS, Study Skills, and grammar. There was a attendance problem with the students there, some of them didn´t show for class quite a bit of time, consequently they didn´t do well, the other teachers had the same attendance problems.
I didn´t really enjoy my semester there. they paid on time and most all the staff was friendly enough ...just doing their job!
Sorry for the lenghty blog here. hope you got some insight.

In China look for a project 211 university. They are the top 100 and have the best students, but not the best pay. Pay is a very narrow range and only going up slowly. However the provided housing may range from dismal to luxury. Many universities are moving out of cities to cheap rural land and the environment is boring. Be careful about agents and recruiters. A legit employer will not have a yahoo or hotmail email address.
