Hi, Can anyone help me. I am looking for a teaching position...

Hi, Can anyone help me.
I am looking for a teaching position ,but because I joined the British army at seventeen, I didn´t go to university so don´t have a degree.
I would like to find countries that do not require a degree for work permit and immigration purposes.
Does anyone know if Thailand or similar places has these requirements?
I am volunteering in a school in Hong Kong at the moment, because that all I seem to be able to get.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, (Getting desperate now) Jason.

Hey Bud, Who knows what issues you may bring to the universe of English teaching,as for me I think that you are a predator who just wants to screw some people I mean it real people. You sound wierd too.

Hi Jason,
David Carranza seems to know what a ´a predator who just wants to screw some people´ is ... possibly because he may feel that he is being one at times.
You want to teach English then go to the country where you want to teach and look for work. If you are a native English speaker you will get a job, and even if you are not, and even if your ability to speak English were good, you would likely get work. If a school wants to hire you the school will get your visa for you; you do not need to get a work visa befiore you go to that country.
Those who maintain that you have to study a language (grammar, etc.) to be able to use it and/or teach are either trying to justify a power/pay not deserved or else are blind to the facts. Babies and children are capable of learning several languages at once without the burden of studying them. I suspect that were a parent to try to teach any language to a baby or a child, let alone two or more, before the baby or child could understand what they are saying it would retard, not advance the learning speed.
Here is waht another teacher wrote in response to comments of another trecher:
"February 23, 2008)
Suggesting that white persons who speak English as their native language are not really teaching is an inaccurate assumption because you are falsely assuming that to be a "real" teacher, one must have a teaching degree. Although it couldn´t hurt, a Bachelors of Education is not a prerequisite to effective teaching. What I´m getting at is there is one way to measure real teaching and it is not dependent on having a degree or being a native speaker because its more about the individual´s attitude, enthusiasm, and passion for what and who they are teaching. Learning is what makes teaching real.
Lastly, achievement of a B.Ed is wonderful and you have every reason to market it. However, trying to do so at the expense of others will backfire and actually undermine your achievement. Your qualification is strong enough to stand on its own; theres no need to speak poorly of others to highlight it.
Teachers are people who inspire learning and personal growth in another.
Peter Drucker, considered the father of management, offered this insight: "Teaching is the only major occupation of man for which we have not yet developed tools that make an average person capable of competence and performance. In teaching we rely on the "naturals," the ones who somehow know how to teach." Best of luck!"

I concur with thw above, and say to you, ´the best of luck´. Remember, the first step of a long trip is the hardest, largely so because we have to ignore all the good and bad ignorant advice of othere who may or may not know of the perils ahead ... go and find them for yourself ...and have a lot of experiences in doing so!

Hey Jason, I left school when I was 15 and was also in the Army for a number of years, (the Australian Army). After my military service I decided to go to university so I returned to the classroom for about 5 years and now I am a degree qualified person with TESOL qualifications, have taught English in several countries (Syria, Japan), and currently teaching in Australia.
My advice to you would be to tough it out for a number of years ( let´s face it there´s nothing tougher than being in the army) and put yourself through university and become properly qualified. It´s the only way people are going to take you seriously. You will then be able to incorporate your life experience into your classroom technique and will be much the better teacher for it.
I did it, you can do it too! Be positive and you will acheive it.
Good luck, Robert.

China is a definite possibility for teaching without "proper" qualifications. Taiwan, for instance, requires a teaching certificate from your home country. You may also want to consider various places that will help you earn your TESOL or TEFL Diploma and then hire you. All is not lost, but your future is limited somewhat without a degree. Even an online degree is acceptable in most places in China, and they will give you credit for your life experiences. Just a thought from my own experience.

Hi Jason, not too sure what the issue is with your photo, but its fine. You´re in a business suit and a tie (appearances are important in Asia). Anyone who says you don´t need a degree to teach is making a blanket statement that could unfairly raise your hopes. In Korea, to get a teaching visa you must have a degree. No way around it. However you can work illegally but there are all sorts of things to consider. A public school wouldn´t hire you. A private academy (hakwon) probably would but keep in mind that they get inspected every so often and they have to register their teachers (Korean and foreign). You would have to go out of the country every 90 days and you would have to make sure that your employer footed the bill. But the other thing to keep in mind is that you wouldn´t get the state medical insurance because you wouldn´t be registered. And, if your employer wants to rip you off you don´t have a leg to stand on.

Furthermore, a TEFL or TESOL qualification will do you a world of good. There are also great books out there as well as lots of stuff online. For example "Second Langugage Acquisition (Oxford Introduction to Language Study)" by Rod Ellis or "How to teach English" by Jeremy Harmer.

I agree with Robert Luttrell, go to school. :) It´s a shame you couldn´t go to uni through the army. With your experience you could get a part time job or summer job teaching English to make money and keep your CV up-to-date. That is, if this is the career for you.

While a degree in anything doesn´t necessarily make you a good teacher, being able to speak a language doesn´t mean that you can teach it. Would you have your mum teach English? I wouldn´t and I of course love her to bits. You have to know why language learners do the things they do and why. It means you can be more understanding and tailor your teaching accordingly.

Good luck! :)

You look fine. At least you can type using proper English punctuation, unlike David "I hate commas" Carrenza.

Hi Jason, Judging by what has been said, what happens on the ground is different to what you read in ads. for teachers etc. Unfortunately Thailand changed the rules and you now need a degree in order to obtain a teaching work permit. But there are other kinds of permits which last up to three months or more and I would be interested to know what John Denison is doing about his visa. Traditionally you would leave the country before your visa expired and return on a fresh visa but they are or have tightened up on this. Overstaying is imprisonable! Similar in Vietnam but again you can obtain a tourist visa (it might have another name) for 3 months and some quite substantial schools take on part-time teachers for that period. Of course there are hundreds of ´back street´ private factory type language schools who would take you on. But do you want that? If you are a career teacher and want to work in a good reputable school with reasonable wages you will need a degree. I could never understand that requirement. Some schools want a degree but a TEFL cert. is not necessary? What aberration of logic is that? TEFL is a skill with theory and methodology. Look at the plethora of learned books/literature there is on it. So if a bloke has a degree in nuclear physics but has never taught English and hasn´t a TEFL qualification, he is OK. What does that say about the bureaucratic mentality? I reserve comment otherwise I will be banned from this blogsite. Best of luck mate.

Why do you not try Jakarta, Indonesia? Last month, my husband and I helped someone who is from California, USA on finding a job in Jakarta where we live. He joined the US army after he graduated high school, but he got a teaching certificate and a couple years of teaching experience in China. He went to Jakarta, Indonesia this year on visa arrival. He couldn´t stay any longer in China because the cost of living and working permit visa are bigger than his salary. He has ever worked at EF for 3 motnhs. Now, he is working at one of English courses in Jakarta, and he gets paid better than at EF. Not all of native English speaking teachers here hold a degree or a teaching certificate, but they can get a job as a teacher here. Good luck on finding a job!

My husband is from USA. He only graduated from High school. He doesn´t have a teaching certificate, but he could become a teacher. He teaches Language Arts in one of Christian National Plus schools in Jakarta. He has been working there for 3 years. Before he started working there, he had ever worked at EF and other English courses.
