Hi, Has anyone taught in Vietnam? I would appreciate details...

Hi Martin

I taught in VN and also at the Saigon Zoo but must say that it was quite a long time ago.

As for the ageism that exists, most of it has to do with the consulates NOT the schools since they cannot obtain visas for us "seniors". I just keep using the term "mature" and list all my credentials and experience and they seem happy enough with that. If they´re not happy about my age, they "file" me and it´s their loss. I also have written to the consulates in the UAE to move into the 21st century regarding the "age" issue since a lot of the foreing engrs. they hire to work there were older and they seemed to like them that way. It was a diplomatic ltr. not a snotty one. One company responded and apologized saying the only reason they posted the yng age was bec. they cldn´t imagine anyone my age wnting such a post. They think we are looking for DOS or director positions.

Good luck,
Anne

Hi Anne,
Thanks for your reply. It´s rather odd because one person will say I can´t get a work visa because I am too old but the agency Global Crossroad, a Canadian agency which frequently crops up says ´No problem, Vietnam is not ageist´. As far as China is concerned it seems to rest on whoever opens the envelope. There is also the added problem that there are millions of aspiring/experienced teachers out there looking. Demand might be enormous but so is supply? Look at all those organisations offering TEFL training. A proper rat race! I need to get out of England for most of the winter and do something useful. You have to pay the volunteer organisations as well as work for nothing so that´s a rat race as well.
Martin.
