What are the standard rates of pay/ average cost of living in Japan?

From what I have researched/ seen in contracts and been told at interviews the standard rate of pay for a first time teachers ESL/ ALT is 250 000 yen/ mnth (for a 35 hr week approx). I’ve heard that you can teach English abroad and save a bit of money, I’m not doing it for the money, rather the experience but would like to be able to save something. Given that Japan/ especially around Tokyo where I would like to be, is 250 000 an acceptable wage to cover costs and live off?

You can survey anywhere in Japan for 2500000 JPY but it depends on your lifestyle. Also if you want to really experience Japan leave Tokyo. The Japanese people are very friendly and living in a smaller city or rural area is a great way to learn Japanese and the other side of Japanese culture.

I am finishing up a one year contract in South Korea. this is my first teaching assignment overseas. From what I´ve heard from from fellow colleagues is that South Korea is the best place to save money and pays out the best in comparison to the cost of living. China is supposed to be the cheapest in terms of cost of living but they don´t pay. Japan pays out but the cost of living can also be very expensive. South Korea is the best bet for saving money in comparison to cost of lving.

Kate do you realize how much that is in US dollars? That´s close to the same Yen for dollar. Beware.
