In Turkey, your school normally applies for your working visa after you secure a position. Some people search for a job on sites like these and then a company offers you round-trip tickets after they choose you.
Some people come here to look for work on a Tourist visa: $20.00 U.S. at the airport, look for and get a job, leave the country and then come back with their new visa.NOT a reccommended way to do it.

Be very very careful about working on a Tourist visa in ANY country.
Best way is to get the job from your home country and then let the school take care of everything else.
The processing time varies depending upon the sort of institution where you are working. Also, teaching visas go through different government ministries depending on if you are working in a university or a school for children. I have no idea about Dersane visas.

Thanks Zaharr! I got a job offer and I signed the contract since February 26. The school started the paper work since late March, but I haven´t heard anything from them as yet. Do you know how long the whole process takes? I heard it was 4-6 weeks but it´s been over 3 months now. So....where do I go from here?
I´ve been told numerous times not to work on a tourist visa, so that I won´t do. I want to have the work permit before leaving the US. So I´ll just have to wait a few more weeks and see what happens.

Hi Joan,
Sorry about your difficulties! I know how hard it is to wait for a visa to come through as you never know if you should accept another job while you´re waiting or live on your savings...big dilemma.
It seems to take most institutions here four months to ge the papers for a teacher but many will have you working before that time and just not report that you ARE. They pay you in cash and you think you´re legit. If in that time they decide you don´t suit their needs they can threaten to report you to the Foreigner´s Police or something but know that they have NO Rİ,GHT to do so. THEY are the ones who will get into trouble for employing you illegaly and so you are safe.
Can you share the name of the institution? They may have gone under by now if you have tried to communicate with them and cannot reach them. Try e-mailing the recruiter first and if you get no answer within a few days, sorry, but you may need to look for another job.
Turkey is a very bureaucratic country and so many papers and photographs are necessary to get anything from a bus pass to a work contract. Everything goes through the Police Department as well but normally the school handles that.
While you are waiting - if you choose that option - why not go on-line and study Turkish to prepare yourself. Not a lot of people here speak English and if they do, they are probably going to ask you to pay more money for goods and services than they ask of other Turks. Always try to get someone who is Turkish to go shopping with you and try to buy only at department stores and supermarkets where they cannot change the prices on you until you get the hang of how to haggle. Not as difficult as it sounds but it takes some practice!
Best of luck and let us know how things go for you!

Most likely they are or were processing your police clearances. If you traveled alot, they need to contact every single national level police agency in every country you´ve ever been in. If you have a new passport or a recent renewal that is easier than coming in with half of the passport filled with visas. That will and does slow the entire process down. I know of people waiting for months for a working permit, and that includes retired cops!
