Anyone in Russia? I am thinking of going to Russia. Any advice about teaching and living in Russia? I have heard that one must leave the country every 6 months in order to get a new visa. Any comments? Obviously it would be quite expensive to return to one´s home country every 6 months!

I have worked in Russia before and will be there again the end of August. If you work for a legitimate school, they will get you a work visa.
If you go to Russia on a business visa, you have to leave every 90 days.
With the work visa, you may have to leave after 90 days and come back. But, you would then be good for the rest of your contract. Of course, in Russia, things can change.
Any idea where in Russia you wish to teach? Do you speak any Russian?

Hi Laurel,

Actually what people do is go to a neighboring country that doesn´t require a visa. For example, you might hop over to Germany for a day and from there, re-enter Russia, acquiring a new visa.

There´s always tricks!

Been thinking about Russia myself. I was there in ´92 for a look-see after the ´fall´ and the place was falling apart. I´m sure it´s greatly improved these days.

Alexandra, thank you for the tip - I´ll bear that in mind.
David, thanks for your response. Ideally I would like to go to Siberia, but anywhere in Russian would be fine. I don´t speak Russian - yet!

Hi Laurel,

My school is hiring for outside of Moscow. I have seen a school in Sargut hiring. I have not seen a lot of schools hiring out in Siberia.
Many are not paying that well out there. I am sure you can find something. I saw a few jobs in Tyumen and Nizhnevartovsk.
A websearch and some of the other esl job sites will get you some information on Surgut and parts of Siberia. I have not seen an ad for Vladivostok or anything along the Chinese border.
If you need more help or hints, let me know. I can´t put direct web links here.

Hello Laurel.I did write before but maybe sent wrong so you didn´t receive. Anyway,I myself am a 48 year vold Englishman, currently living in England but going to join my Russian wife in St.Petersburg for a year in early September. I have some teaching experience in Greece as in Russia. For what it´s worth my own view is that although Russian has definite potential it takes time to get established and to get used to Russian ways. If you are determined enough you will make it there but like myself do expect hard times.
Hope this brief analysis is of some use.
Bye
Robert.

Thanks for the advice, Robert! Could you be more specific as to the kind of difficulties I would experience?

Hello Laurel.Sorry, unable to be too specific and my experience is probably more due to the fact that I am an Englishman and generally found the Russians difficult to get used to.However, they may well have found me a little odd also but put it down to my being English. What part of Russia are you hoping to go to?Trust I,ll be able to respond again.best Wishes.Robert.

Hello Robert, ideally I would like to go to Siberia, but if I find a reasonable job elsewhere then I will accept it.

Hello Laurel. My experience of Siberia is nil I´m afraid. However, maybe I could still be of use to you if you come to St.Petersburg.Are you from the UK and why Russia?Do excuse me if a little personal but I recall my own 1st time in Russia and have sympathy with you attempting the journey for the first time also. When are you going? What have you done so far in looking for work there?look forward to your reply with interest.Best Wishes.Robert
