Can anyone here please tell me more about teaching in South Korea. I have been offered a couple of positions there in or around Seoul, but not sure about it. Ideally, I would like to be close to the beach but I am sure those are hard to come by. Anyone out there please advise me before I decide myself. Maybe there are some things that I haven´t heard before I depart. Just keeping all my options open and hope to hear from someone who has been over in that part of the world.

I just finished a year in Korea and left. I would not recommend you to live outside of Seoul unless you were to live in Busan. Living in Busan would allow you to be close to the beach and those jobs are not hard to find. The best site to look for jobs is going to be www.englishspectrum.com

Korea has ups and downs. The money is good. I didn´t care much for a lot of other things and the bad weather and darkness almost killed me. I did save most of my paychecks though and there are opportunities to do things like climb mountains. If you are outside the city you will feel very isolated and treated as a weirdo. Just my two cents. Hope this helps. If you want the beach, go to Busan. If you want to live in a real city with good shopping and stuff to do, go to Seoul. Do not be tricked into going to a place "close to Seoul." As soon as you are 15 minutes out, it´s a different place altogether.

Just make sure you submit to the fingerprint check, DNA sample, retinal scan, voice prints, EEG, EKG, procto exam, credit check, and IQ test before leaving. Oh, also make sure the "school" you are intending on working for also gives you their DNA, and take a close look at their toxicology reports too. Korea, just say no.

He Ashland, I guess my response is a bit late for you, but here it is anyway. I tutor children at the moment. I tutored twin boys aged 14 from Seoul. I asked them to compare Vancouver to Seoul. They said that Seoul had no beauty or nature and was very dirty. Just my two cents...The Korean people I have met are very nice and can also be very serious. They are different from other Asians.

I have spent 9 yrs teaching in Korea, and it can be great. Holland´s comoplaint about the new requirements are valid- the drug aids tests violate your human rights, but teachers are challenging this and it may change. As for beaches, yes Pusan has the biggest, but also the most crowded. I would recommend JeJu island or Yeosu, on the southern coast. Jeju has a big tourist industry ("Korea"s Hawaii, which it is NOT) and Yeosu has small quiet beaches and beautiful mountainous coast lines. Almost anywhere in the southern provinces are beautiful. Yes, you may receive attention as a foreigner, but your response mood level of friendliness will determine whether or not it is positive or negative. Good luck to you Ashland. Check out the Korean Forums on other websites for lots of detailed info on contracts, specific schools (there is a ´blacklist´ of worst schools) and red flags to watch out for.
