NON NATIVE TEACHERS? Hi all! I am a non native ESL EFL teacher. I had both my BA and MS on TESOL. I had my MS degree in New York as a Fulbright Scholar. I have 8 years of experience both with kids and adults. I have some experience with adult immigrants in the US, too. Also, I can speak Italian and Japanese. So, I passionately would like to get a job either in Japan or Italy. However, it is not so easy to get a job as a non native teacher. Is there a way to do it or should I quit looking for one? I need suggestions. Thank you.

Never mind. I am also a non-native teacher. You will find plenty of job offers, especially in Asia. Europe and Japan might be a difficult market, but it´s all possible. If you ever consider teaching in other countries in Asia, go to China. Possibilities here are almost endless...

Hi Evrı,m,
I worked in Japan for thirteen years and met lots of non-native English-speaking teachers. Willingness to communicate is the most looked-for quality anywhere.
Besides, with credentials like yours, no one could possibly have doubts about your qualifications :)
Best of luck! I hope to see you ´just go for it´!

If I were you I would join an EFL blogsite like if you are interested in Thailand. These sites allow you to contact individual teachers which is essential if you want the fine detail, and a personal contact is much better than this. I have actually made friends with a guy who I shall meet for a coffee when I arrive. He has emailed me lots of information on materials etc.
I have strong feelings about strings of qualifications for TEFL. It has become ridiculously out of hand. You don´t need a BA, MA, or any higher qualification to teach your own language. You should be looking for a DoS job not a teaching hack with lousy money and millions of teachers looking for the same job.

Uzma look at what and the way you are writing. I do not really see it helping your cause. To be taken seriously in any form or manner I suggest you present yourself as if you have an education. Granted, it is the computer and typing errors are easy but that is just ridiculous.

Evrim, if I were you, I´d find someone with a Masters Degree or even a Doctorate, and have an evaluation done of your phonetics, and speaking ability. You sure have some great qualifications. Get some written evaluations done, and add them to your resume. I taught in Japan with a High School Diploma. The key is to get in, and make every student wish you were there teacher in any school.

Good luck

This is more in response to Uzma´s thread than it is a suggestion for you. However, I truly hope that you don´t take her too seriously because if you feel that your color is a problem, what would anyone else think? Your lack of confidence in your abilities would surely show. It´s kind of a self fulfilling prophecy. I think, therefore I am. I am also not a white person and I have never thought that to be a personal problem. I have not experienced very much in the form of negativity because of it and you should not let it become a judgmental factor in your life either. I shudder to think that she is holding herself back with that type of thinking but it may be something that she should think about. If I were you, Evrim, I would use my abilities to obtain what I´m after in a positive vein and leave everything else to people who hold themselves back with negative thinking.

Hi Evrim, It´s easy to think this is a colour prejudice thing, my view is that employers put a lot of store in native English speakers because they have an intrinsic knowledge of the language learned from a tiny baby. Now, you probably have a far greater knowledge of English grammar than most native speakers because you learnt it. Most native speakers don´t know their adverbs from their prepositions but they speak naturally and know all the idioms, colloquial expressions and prepositions. That´s important but to some extent deluded because there are some pretty impenetrable local accents with native speakers. I often wonder what would happen if a teacher was employed online and arrived with an impenetrable Glaswegian accent. Lovely though the Scottish accent is, I think foreign learners would have difficulty.
I think Christopher´s post was spot on. If the Japanese are difficult stuff ´em. Why not research the Thailand International schools. They are the ´bees knees´ and pay very good money. They love higher qualifications and professional teachers. All the other teaching hacks would love to work for the International schools. It´s also nice and warm there! Good luck.
