Is a school legitimate when it asks you for the photo section of your passport? This seems strange to me, they already know so much about us with our name, address, degrees etc.

That is a pretty standard procedure in Korea. Appearance is very important and many academies want to make sure you are what they are looking for. If they consider you "ugly" and often if you´re not white, you will not be hired.

It is very common in Mexico as well. Occasionally some teachers from non-native countries show up with a strong accent. It is only to verify that the person is truely a Native speaker with no strange accents as students will complain.

Yes, this is standard for almost all countries, now. Think nothing of it. They are checking to see that you do, indeed, possess a passport.

I have had my photograph photocopied so many times in Thailand

I agree it is uncomfortable in these days of Identity theft
