The "work permit" is often a misnomer given by people for the Z visa, even though the Z visa is only the type of visa granted to those persons entering China for the purpose of work. You have thirty days from the time of your entry into China to complete the paperwork to convert the Z visa into a residence permit. Your school should help with this. Incidentally, your school should also pay for this. You should insist upon that during contract negotiations, because it´s a little expensive.
