Why is it so difficult to volunteer to teach English?
Every website I have checked want enormous amounts of money!!
Im looking for a volunteer job in Africa Middle East where I pay no money, and in return for my English teaching skills and hard work, I get food and lodging.

I dont want to pay $6000 to live in a mud hut in Malawi writing letters in the mud to get paid a $100 stipend!

Any suggestions?
Its all very frustrating.
Thanks

I think you need to be very careful about the tone that you take in publicly viewed forums. You sound angry and like you have a bad attitude. If you have lived abroad before you will agree that attitude is everything. Having taught ESL for a number of years ( including in the Middle East and in Malawi, which was my favorite country) I think you should just plan on showing up in person to a country that advertises widely and does not REQUIRE a credential. Because you do not state that you have any credentials to teach, potential employers will b e skeptical of making a committment to you.

I do understand your frustrations. I had first sought volunteer opportunities and also found that most required significant dollars. I then decided to obtain TEFL and then seek positions that may pay little dollars which by default means that one is volunteering. You will most likely have to seek independent work as going through agencies will require payment. I urge you to be patient and continue to be blessed and be a blessing to others.

I have a suggestion that works for me. I visit a place with the intention of getting a feel for it. I stay at one small guest house or small hotel and meet people. Some hotel owners have suggested that I stay and teach the staff (paying job) and other people have suggested organizations that need help. So, just be "there" and the opportunity may come to you. There are many jobs in Georgia, not requiring experience and maybe not degree. One is volunteer, but another pays $300 per month and you live with a family for 6 or 12 months. Six months with $300 would get you where you need to be, close to the Middle East. They pay airfare upfront. These positions are well advertised, so look around. Good luck! MCH
