Can teaching abroad become addictive? Did you only want to teach 1 year and found yourself 6 years later still abroad? Let me know your stories.

Teaching can be addictive only if the working environment constitutes to be worth it.

Teaching abroad is a great experience and especially if you find a great school. I enjoyed my time in Ukraine but other opportunities opened up for me and my family. I´d consider going back but now I make too much to teach abroad again. I´m happy that I took the chance while I was able to and my life if richer because of the contacts I made and experiences that I had.

My experience working in Saudi Arabia was indeed very worth remembering. The culture, tradition and religion were new to me and made me more understanding and patient to my students.Coming back to work there would be great with a high salary worth enough for the effort I exerted to enhance learning-teaching situation.

I am considering a position in Saudi Arabia but the offers and locations are quite varied. I taught last year in Korea and it was the same situation. How do you determine what is a fair salary before you commit in the US? A whole year teaching, when you know you could have made more, is a bit to swallow! - mike, novato, CA USA

For me, teaching abroad is addictive to the point that I would rather teach outside the United States than inside it. Some of my placements abroad have not lived up to my expectations, but then, there is always another one waiting some place else. One great thing about teaching is that you always get a chance to start over. Also, teaching abroad affords one the opportunity to see the world BEFORE retiring (assuming that retirement will ever be possible). I plan to continue teaching overseas for as long as the Good Lord allows me to do so!

I wouldn't call it addictive. I would call it a poverty trap.

Not everywhere is like that. One of the best countries to work in for savings and security is South Korea. It's one of the only countries that offers a teacher a national pension. That's a huge draw, although not something people always think about when they're fresh out of university.

I touched down in Pudong in july 2010 (although I had been to China in 2008 for Olympics). I touched down in Pudong in July 2010 with 1000 UK pounds in my pocket. 2021... I am still here. I have in that time, worked in schools, bought a car, got married and started a business. oh and lived through lockdown in 2020 as well.
