Yes off course, I worked few remote places of that time for a period of 10 years in teaching profession. One was Birnin-Kebbi(1978-84) Can anyone find this place on map?, where there was no running water, electricity with generator and other aminities of life even proper food, with wild life, like lizard, snaks, mosquteos etc were very common. However, the people were very good. The students were very cooprative and ready to learn. Similarly Sokoto (1974-77), slightly better, but highly un-developed. However, during this period we enjoyed a lot with natural life and still we miss that even after 25 years of my departure from that place. There is a lot to write about my experience and time I spent there.
Hello, I am from Kano city in Northern Nigeria. Although I did not live in these areas in former Sokoto state, I have an idea of the type of life experienced in such remote areas as I was a teacher in many villages and towns in Kano state of Nigeria. My addition to this discussion is that the Birnin kebbi and Sokoto areas in Nigeria are not the same as they used to be in 1970´s. There are a lot of iremarkable mprovements.
The hospitality of the people and the curiosity level and readiness of the students to learn and their respect to elders and teachers has not changed. Although you may not have all the amenities available in developed countries, there are a lot of benefits and life experience you will gain and cherish. I currently live in USA, but I miss a lot of things such as the simplicity of life and the down-to Earth honest human interactions and respect for the diginity of others and human life. Whenever I visit Nigeria on vacation, I take a couple of days to visit old friends in such remote areas to get in touch and reconnect with what we lack in developed nations. In short, life is what you make out of it, and it is up to each of us to find a balance.
My experience was of from 1974-1984 in Nigeria. I travelled through out Northeren Nigeria as well as up-to Lagos a number of times. During that period Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Ibadan were developed places. While there were small towns like Turetta,, Gusau, Fantwa,Shinkafi, Katsina,Malamfashi, Zuru, Zangeru, Jega, yelwa, Bida,Illella, Argungu etc. where there was no running water, electricity on regular basis during seventies. However, I could not visit any place of Southeren Nigeria like Enugu, Port-Harcourt etc. My stay in Nigeria I can say was golden period of my life, it was my mid twenties and mid thirties. Now I am early sixtees. However, I kept all the memories as part of my life. But what I felt about the remote places of work of that time period, I explained.
