Hi, I am considering going to work to the United Arab Emirates. The money seems to be good but if anyone has taught please let me know how it is in terms of working conditions, lifestyle, culture etc. Thanks much!

It all depends on you, who you are, what you like, etc... For instance, if you like major cities, you may consider going to Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Not too far from Abu Dhabi is Al Ain. While Al Ain is on the lower scale of things, it´s not too shabby. Frankly, I like (1) Al Ain and (2) Abu Dhabi better than Dubai, which looks too much like Manhattan to me. Working conditions are the regular 8-5 unless you work for a language school that does split shifts. In terms of lifestyle, Dubai is very cosmopolitan. You will find anything you ever need want, including major traffic jam. The city is so western that, to me, it has lost its Middle Eastern aspect. Then followed by Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, which I much prefer. If you ever lived or vacationed in any Middle Eastern area, you won’t have any problem(s) in the UAE. My opinion, though. Hope that helps.

In response to your question if you would like to supply more information regarding the likely employer I would be able to give you my opinion of working conditions etc. I have worked her for the last 3 years for 3 different employing groups and all are different. Could you please give more details such as: Primary Secondary Management New School Model etc

Anyone who works there contributes to the enslavement of hundreds of thousands of workers from Bangladesh, India, and many Central Asian countries. If you have a lot of money it is a playground, but it has no conscience.

thank you all for replying to my thread. I have learned something from each of yours and appreciate your honesty. I have however decided to go back to Canada and start my own healing company.

I agree with Michael that some of the authorities are derelect in their duty to people who come from these countries but lots of other people who live here do their best to help when circumstances are published in the local newspapers. Anyone is a huge statement as some teachers who have been in safe permanent positions for years are ignorant of the fact that in many countries before and after the financial crisis have very few jobs available and many have been cut from the total number in many schools. NQT´s do not have a hope unless they have relatives who can help them or they are in the know. So Michael these people who come here get better wages than in their home country and many get rippped off by agents etc and are illiterate but only this morning there was a item on BCC in the Middle East Program about how much money they do send home to their families. So...........Do not judge a book by its cover until you find out the whole story and truth. To give credit to the Ministry of Labour in Dubai they have introduced and enforce fully many new rules regarding violations of the Labour Law and help all categories of workers quickly and efficiently. Cheers Catherine
