Hi all. I know that this is not a new top and probably has been discussed a million times but I wanted it to go to the top of the list. Please forgive me if I have not done this the "correct" way.
I have many qualifications but no degree and contrary to what the language school told me when I took the TEFL course I am finding it impossible to get a job. I feel I have a lot to offer to an employer and I am hoping for some advice from you. Thanking you in anticipation.

What do you mean by no degree?

Honestly, it´s really because there are so many new (young) foreigners entering the teaching market. I´ve been in China for over 7 years and it´s gone from a time when people would stop you on the street and ask to touch your hair...to seeing a foreign face on every street corner! On top of limiting teachers with no degree they are also flooding the market with cheap labor...so that long term teachers such as myself are forced to work at half our worth.

First off...since you were paying the language school that you got you TEFL course at- don´t expect them to be upfront with the fact that there is not really a big market out there for you. They are there to make money, not to give advice. (Sorry it seems kind of blunt but I do see it a lot)
Secondly...don´t give up, there are positions out there for you- just not the ones you´ll normally be interested in. They are the ones with low pay, working off L F visas, or smaller cities towns villages that won´t pay no where near top dollar.

So what you need to do is get your foot in the door. Take those low paying jobs- try to stay away from places with a lot of "office hours"...get some experience to take their eyes off the lack of a degree. Also try to specialize in a certain group such as 2-6 year olds and be very outgoing. Sell yourself in a way that minimizes your education and emphasizes your personality. Post videos of yourself online singing songs and using games.

Remember that teaching outside of a regular school is 90% based on how well you can attract and entertain the students.

Hi Cheryl,
I was just asking the same question myself.
I lived in morocco for 6 months and got a teaching job in a private school but it was just word of mouth.
I havnt used this site for a long time but i decided i would come back as i would like to go back to morocco to teach.
By the way i dont have a teaching degree, I have an NNEB and a HLTA

Cheryl, how about administrative or interviewing new students to prepare for tests? Teaching assistant is an option. If you are in the US, perhaps you could take the state tests for teacher certification. There are programs that assist a middle aged lady like yourself. Good luck! MCH

I am the same person with or without my degree. Degrees are most useful to opening doors. They are an expensive key to greater opportunities. I am capable of learning on my own, and have many skills, but a degree to many is proof of ability, not experiences.

Try the U.S. Peace Corps to get your foot in the door. With no degree, it could get you noticed in a foreign country for steady teaching work. My research has revealed that you need a college or university Bachelor’s degree as well as a TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, or TRINITY Certificate. The employers and schools require it.
The US has many schools that offer the aforementioned certificates of TEFL or TESOL, but do not require a college degree to take the course. One still has to obtain the degree to meet most qualifications. A lot of kids are teaching in China without a degree. I imagine if some kind of program of some sort.
