Teaching in Oman
My name is Opal. I recently recieved a job offer from the a school in Oman.
Has any one ever worked in Oman?
Would I be able to buy food for a month on 1,400 USD per month?
They are offering free health care and housing transportation.

Is the free health care some kind of free government clinic?
What would a single furnished accomodation be like? A one bedroom apartment, or an apartment suitable for a single parent but the two bedrooms.

what would transportation be like?

I also lived in Oman as a single western female and it is fine. As a woman you might get a bit of verbal harassment but it is safe there. Wearing the obiyah (but no headscarf! that can cause more misunderstandings) cuts that down a bit, but you can also wear western clothes (wear long sleeves though). As for food, it is cheap there if you go to the supermarket. Lulu´s is a good supermarket. Food is cheaper there than in developed Western countries. You can also eat out for various prices, including very cheaply. I love the Omani people, and it is a beautiful and natural country, although almost developed. The apartments that companies provide when you teach there are usually very nice and large (my experience). Renting your own can be done very cheaply compared with our prices. You can also take a bus to Dubai, UAE from there and that country is developed and more open. If you ever get harassed, either ignore it or pull out your mobile phone and say you are calling the police (999) and they will take off immediately. But don’t worry about that, it is meaningless. Hope you have a nice time there.

1400 usd per month on food... are you serious?
Healthcare is usually at a number of private hospitals.
Housing is more than comfortable.
Taxis are abundant and cheap.
Oman is the hidden jewel of the ESL world.
If you are a serious teacher and are culturally sensitive - you will love Oman. One of my favourite places in the world.

I have worked in Oman. Its a great place to be. Very safe and Omanis are wonderful. Food cost has risen a lot but still cheaper compared to other western nations. However medical facilites is not as good as it should be. Clinics are small medical centres where you can be treated for minor ailments. Medicines on health insurance provided by employer are free. However the medicine dispensed , itself takes is not as effective , takes a long time to recover. Doctors are mostly indians, jordanians, Pakistanis Egyptians and Syrians , nurses are mostly indians. Apart from good health system. Oman is a place to be.

To Dr Paul below.
But you didn’t answer the lady’s question. Could she live on $1400 a month? And you like a psych Dr asnswer by asking her question back at her. So can she? Is she being absurd because she can live on half that or because it will take a lot more than that?
I’m sure she’s found out by now, but I’m still curious.
