I want to know what are the prospects of teaching job in south Africa and China. I am a Indian citizen, possessing Science graduation degree and B.Ed. I have an experience teaching science and maths for almost 10 years. Most of the ads clearly state that they are looking for native English speakers.
Will it impact my chances of getting a job abroad?
PLEASE GUIDE ME.

I have worked in China and I know that in the cities other than Shanghai, Hong Kong and perhaps also Beijing, people who are fluent in English but not native English speakers are able to find jobs. For example, I knew people teaching English in GuonDong province and in ChongQing who were from Egypt, other African countries, and Nepal. Im not sure how easy it is to find such jobs by internet. My experience with Serious Teachers is that many companies looking for teachers through this site are only looking for teachers with standard requirements. It is possible that you can find such jobs through other types of internet searches. You may also be able to find work by simply going to China, to cities other than Shanghai and HK, and looking around yourself. The less developed the city, the more willing they may be to hire teachers of other nationalities, since most native English speakers tend to go to the more developed cities and so schools in other parts of China have trouble finding native English teachers. For me, just flying into China and looking for work after arrival is not a risk, since I can find such work very quickly. Im not sure though what the situation would be for you, but I know non-native teachers who left one job in China for another and were able to find new jobs. One problem is that jobs in other parts of China, except perhaps for GuanDong, normally dont pay as well, and they may not treat teachers as well either (GuanDong might be a bit better). But you can also be lucky and find a company with better treatment. I see you are also mentioning maths and sciences. I also teach these subjects, and I think the situation should be similar. You can also approach hospitals anywhere in China and suggest to them that you can teach Medical English, and then negotiate the price, find textbooks, put the students into levels of English ability, and start up the program yourself. I did this in ChongQing.

I knew Philippine teachers teaching English in Thailand and being treated quite well. They didnt seem to be treated as well in China. Seems to depend on how the level of development of the country, or the concept of that anyway, compares with that of China or the country in which one is working.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

You can teach in China but perhaps not in Shanghai or Hong Kong. Maybe you can also check other websites like expatriates and craigslist and post your own ad there as well, so they can contact you. I worked in China for 3 years and knew people teaching there from Egypt, other parts of Africa, Nepal and the Philippines. It might also help to just go there and look for work yourself, but for me as a native English speaker this is easy to do but for you Im not sure what the level of risk would be, although I knew non native speaking teachers changing jobs there for others which they had been able to find. The ones I knew worked in ChongQing and GuonDong province. Schools are anxious there to find teachers fluent in English and will sometimes also tell the students these people are from our countries, even if they look like they are not. Teachers who were not native speakers were not treated as well in ChongQing, in my experience, and may have also been paid less. But not all schools are the same. High schools and colleges might treat us better than training centres. I also teach the sciences abroad and I once approached a hospital myself, in ChongQing, to start a program there in Medical English, and this is another idea. GuonDong is more open and pays better than ChongQing. If you have more questions you may ask me.

You can teach in China but not as easily in Shanghai or Hong Kong. I knew non native English speakers from Africa, Nepal, Egypt etc teaching in ChongQing and GuonDong. The pay may be a bit less and the treatment less good, but GuonDong is more open and pays more. Ive lived in China for 3 years. You could try going there directly to find work, but for me this is easy and Im not sure of the risk for you. You can also put your own ad on other websites but it seems this program doenst allow me to mentinon their names. The ones I have in mind are just typical international websites where one can find teaching work among other things.

Thanks Elizabeth. What is the ratio of vacancies for English Teacher and vacancies for science math teachers. Also in Guongdong on an average how much they pay in US dollars. If I have TOEFL or CELTA certificates, will that increase my chances in cities like Shanghai or Hongkong.

Mainland China is your best bet.... No way you will work in Hong Kong unless you want to wash dishes.

If you are a non-native and or non-white prospective foreign teacher and, despite the reality of the situation, you still think teaching English in China is the best thing for you at this time (and I understand that this is a possibility), you should follow the following advice:
1.Avoid private language schools altogether unless they are specifically looking for teachers to work in their business or corporate departments training adults.
2.Limit your job search to 2nd and 3rd tier two- and three-year vocational schools and colleges in international cities or 2nd and 3rd tier four-year universities situated in remote or undesirable locations. Another weaker but viable possibility is public elementary schools, especially in remote locations and particularly if you have experience with this age group.
3.Grow a thick-skin and, by all means, try your very best not to personalize any of it—because, in reality, it´s not personal at all.

Best of luck to you.
