I have had several telephone interviews. My brain was picked for methods of teaching Special Education classes and classroom control. Then, a less experienced teacher was hired for less money and given my teaching strategies. I know this because I was asked to repeat my answers while the interviewers wrote my answers down in detail. I will only speak in generalities from now on.

There are no rules and therefore people just get the best they can with whatever means necessary.

To apply any morel and ethical standards is desasterious because most of these places are new version of sweat houses. The main drive is just money. This is the new money maker and we are in a lawless era within this systems.

Take your chances roll your dice there are always some good apples within the bunch.

Just be yourself. If you are planning to teach English, then you have to make sure that you have a thorough grasp of the language. Do NOT give formulaic answers. MAKE SURE that you have heard and understood the question. If you have not understood the question, it is better to ask for a repetition of the question...POLITELY, and CORRECTLY, of course. (I am sorry, I didn’t get that. Would you repeat your question, please.) There is NOTHING more embarrassing. I have interviewed many non-native speakers for jobs, and THIS is the biggest weakness: answering questions that are completely off topic, and formulaic. So, bottom line: be yourself, keep it conversational, and keep it two-way if you can.

it is important to speak naturally, with a smile, and to avoid speaking too quickly, too formally. Indian speakers have problems with this, as they have studied academic English and tend to sound rhetorical while speaking. I have taught in India, and their schools have trained them to describe things in extreme details with fanciful language that is considered awkward by other native speakers.

Therefore, as a person who has interviewed candidates in the past, I suggest that answers, responses, and inquiries be stated simply, and that it is important to demonstrate good listening skills by showing interest in the company, potential employer.

The key words in the field of language training are community-based learning, student-centered classroom atmospheres, facilitating rather than ’teaching’, and leading lessons in mechanics in context of discussing real life situations, with authentic materials.

May I also add that it is important that your grammar be correct within your cover letter, and that spelling be correct within the resume. Six people have responded to this thread, and the number of errors in them is alarming.

If you have not received responses to your applications, it is because your errors are glaring off the page to the interviewer. For example (and I write this with deep respect to all), we would not write," I am interested to find out..." but "I am interested in finding out..." or "I wish to know..." which is a more direct, concise way of introducing the independent clause.

"Get a response"

I see run on sentences, incorrect verb usage, misuse of the infinitive and gerunds, and misplacement of the direct object in sentences that all correct forms of syntax are ignored.

If one is not a language professional, then it shows up quickly in the cv and cover letter. I do not criticize to insult anyone, but suggest strongly that a few days of brushing up on grammar, reviewing the rules, having a native speaker look over your documents for errors, and by using spell check and grammar check, you will be able to create more opportunities for your job search.

You have my warmest regards, and hopes that you are able to find good work soon.

I can mostly comment on my experiences from having worked in China. The telephone interview is never a guarantee of employment, merely a means to eliminate a candidate. The HR is looking for just the right accent it is important to sound as white skinned as possible.
It is also a method, in agreement with some other posters here already, for the HR to get some free advice about teaching materials. It is therefore important to seem well acquainted with materials and methods but to reveal none of them.
The one benefit that can come from the telephone interview is to judge the sincerity of the HR agenda. If an offer is verbally made that is not already in the contract, the interviewer can ask: "will you put that in writing?" If any backtracking is detected, he can know what kind of workplace environment he might be getting himself into.
