Hello. I am thinking about taking a position in the Republic of Georgia. I’ve done some reading about the country and culture online, but I’d love to here some first-hand experiences if anyone has them to share!

I have talked to teachers there and interviewed myself....I don’t now about your deal or offer, if any, but they pay very very very low, and it’s dangerous because of the recent skirmish.
Even before.

I actually have tons of tips. I am overseas now, and have been for 7 months and been to a few countries and can give tops, advice help and some job leads actually. I am in the Eastern European region now.

I was there in May/June this year but just travelling. Tbilisi is a nice city but the pay is low. Spoke to some teachers on a voluntary contract and they loved the place. Batumi is best avoided as it is still in need of many street repairs and there is very little to do. Unfortunately I did not see much else as I travelled around Armenia for too long and visited Nagorno Karabahk. If you like monasteries and hills you can have an interesting time visiting. I would choose a short contract first just to get the feel of place and to see if you like it. Also Russian is a very useful language to know in that region - more so than Georgian which is only spoken by a few million people - The Georgian script reminds me of Thai.

Should add that nearly every Georgian i met speaks Russian just in case your thinking of learning a language for your time in that region

Agreed. Russian is useful, and I’m learning some now. Ukraine btw, pays a lot more. I’m here now....lovely country.

I agree with Stacy about Ukraine it does pay alot more and i think it has more to offer than Georgia. Its certainly huge by comparison. The Georgian people are friendly though and what i saw of Tbilsi did not seem at all dangerous.

Thanks Roy. Your answers kinda answered my suspicions and ideas based in what other said of safety issues etc...anywhere we go, we must practice utmost caution.

Something to keep in mind, is you sometimes spend more in such places...sometimes, because most schools will give you housing....sure, BUT with a host family, and that can be awesome, I love new culture, families, people..sharing dinner, stories, like I did in Vietnam, but quarters are small, tight, and yon can get your own room, but that’s where you start spending. My suggestion is somewhere that pays more, if your wanting to live decentl off teaching. There are other countries, like the Ukraine, that pay more like I said.

I do teach sometimes....my full-time career is film...imdb my name, with Paul in the middle.. I direct, act...trying to do a feature now...heh.
English clubs are hugely popular in Ukraine. I can hook anyone up with a potential job here, and know of a nice hostel till you get a flat etc.
Would love to meet newcomers and new teachers here while I’m here. I move around a lot for film work...anyway, Ukraine, Poland, and even Romania pay more...

I have been to Georgia many times - I used to be a seismologist and worked there all over the Republic since 1960-s.
There is not a single Post-USSR Republic, where men would be so sexually concerned over the blond european-style females. Age, height, stature and weight regardless, you will always be the object of sexual interest. These people are deaf to the words of reason, they understand only force, so you will have to be protected by some male authority.
As an example of Georgian attitude to women - in any convenience store you will see 2 lines at the cash register. One line is for males, another for females, and not a single woman will be served if there is still one single male in another line. In short, being formally Christians, people of Georgia have their souls turned to Islam. The only thing they accept from Christianity is the permission to drink wine.

I have worked overseas for the last 3 years. I was in Asia. But these Georgian ideas I find interesting and from the "stone ages".

Hello Sarah,
Georgia doesn’t pay very well. I think you should consider Turkey. It’s a good mixture of the Arabic and European Cultures. I am living here right now, and I love it. I am unfortunately going home because of family issues in the United States. I am very sad to leave though, because my employer has been very accomodating and they gave the foreign teachers a nice set up. We have free housing, and the work isn’t difficult. Everyone is very welcoming and I have been to dinner at many of their houses, which really makes for a rich cultural experience.
