Hi! My name is Nina Jack and I am an EFL teacher. I recently finished teaching a semester in Thailand and have my sights set upon a 2nd year in South Korea. For those of you who have been to South Korea, you know they’ve tightened their policies on bringing in foreign teachers and ones from the United States now have to provide a nationwide background check. Aside from the arduous process of obtaining the results, where do you applicants go to get fingerprinted now? The sheriff’s office in my county has switched to electronic scanning but they still require me to bring in MY OWN official fingerprint cards & I don’t have any. I’ve missed the deadline for March 2012 but the main problem is finding fingerprinting cards. Any suggestions?

I live in VA and the State Troopers did 2 cards for me for $15 for the pair and they provided the cards. My problem is that being 45 years old I can not get a South Korean school to reply to my resume posting. Try your State Troopers barracks in your state they still are required to do prints the old school way.

The fingerprint card is a link on the right side of the following page:

Hello,

Since that’s considered a government form (FD-258) you can download it from just about any federal government website. I even think I got mine from the Dept of State website when I wanted a visa for my husband and wanted to check his background. You can either Google FD-258 and a list of sources will come up or go directly to www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background.../standard-fingerprint-form-fd-258 to download it, just be sure to print it out onto a hard card and not your standard paper.

Oh, and you have to get the background check apostilled by the US State Department. To get it quickly, I suggest www.rushdocs.com. I used them and they were inexpensive and very fast.

I printed mine on standard paper and it was accepted no problem.

Where are you located? If in Korea you just go to any South Korean Police Station and get your finger prints taken and they send them back to the States. Not sure about other countries.
It is a long drawn out process.

Forget Korea. Try Japan instead. Few good jobs in SK and they make you jump through too many hoops!

Hi Nina,
Hope you get this. I live in San Diego and there are companies that do Live Scans for about $30.00 and they will give you the card of your fingerprints as requested. Our sheriff’s department does not do them anymore either. Hope this helps.

Nina,
If you are from America, all criminal record checks have to be done through the FBI to teach in South Korea. You can download the form from the FBI website and you have to go to a local police station to get yourself fingerprinted. Then send it in the FBI. I am not sure of the process if you are from a country other than America.

Sorry I forgot to mention that when I did my FBI check I was living in South Korea and after the local police station fingerprinted me, I sent it off to be processed in the states and it was accepted. The Yeoju police station did put an official stamp on it and signed it, took about two months to complete.

MY SUGGESTION IS DON’T GO UNLESS YOU KNOW YOUR COMPANY IS CONNECTED TO USA OR CANADA. KOREAN CONTRACTS ARE MERELY A SUGGESTION. NOTHING IS SET TO PROTECT,YOU, THE TEACHER. IT IS ALL IN PLACE TO USE TO PROTECT THE OWNE. I HAD A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT HEATHERS ENGLISH COLLEGE. SHE HAD A HABIT OF FIRING PEOPLE ONE WEEK BEFORE THEIR TERM WAS UP SO SHE WOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY AIR FAIR HOME. IT TOOK ME TWO YEARS TO RECOUPERATE FROM THE EXTREEM STRESS OF A SCREAMING ACUSATORY AND I HAVE TO SAY, WICKED BOSS. IT IS A DIFFERENT CULTURE AND YOU ARE NOT ONE OF THEM. GENUINE CHRISTIANS, HOWEVER, ARE KIND AND APOLOGETIC. BUT THERE IS NO HELP FROM EVEN OUR EMBASSY. THEY ARE WEARY WITH THESE ABUSES. BE SURE OF WHO YOU DECIDE TO WORK FOR...AND STAY AWAY FROM PRIVATE HAUGWANS. WE WERE CONTROLLED, USED, ROBBED, TRICKED, USED AND ABUSED. THERE WERE TIMES WHEN I HAD NO STOVE TO COOK ON AND ONLY ONE BROKEN CHAIR IN MY TINY FLAT. IT WAS NOISY NIGHT AND DAY. I WAS SICK MOST OF THE TIME I WAS THERE. BE WARE!!!! TRUDY

Hello:

I ordered a supply of twenty five (25) fingerprint cards from Innovation Teachers. Innovation Teachers is a private commercial business. I then went to the local Cape Coral Police Department in Florida and paid a small fee of five dollars ($5.00). It should be noted that I did read where one can print the fingerprint card form directly from the United States Department of Justice’s web site on quality stock paper and submit it accordingly.

Hello all, it’s Nina Jack. Thank you all so much for your input, they’re greatly appreciated. I did go to the FBI website and printed out the cards on cardstock, took it to my sheriff’s department only to be informed it wasn’t the "official" ones so they refused. The police department and UPS also couldn’t help and my friends at the Solicitor’s office were calling other counties to check- they all used either electronic scanning or demanded I bring my own cards. Luckily a friend pointed me to a county north of Atlanta, GA where I reside and I was able to get fingerprinted. FYI, I guess it depends on your local law enforcement because mine were pretty useless and I was extremely frustrated then. Now I have them and ready for a federal apostille, etc. Again thank you all so much!

I would never set foot in Korea. I have a cousin who was terribly cheated and abused and a half Korean/American teaching colleague who became little more than an indentured slave to a school that kept her passport. In a great big world and there are much better places to be where teachers are respected and even honored. I am very interested in hearing your experience Ms Jack in the coming months. Make sure you have dollars, credit card and your passport kept on your person at all times. Without them you are a victim. Good luck.

In August, I returned from a 1 year teaching contract in South Korea. I visited the South Korean Consulate in NYC to get everything squared away. In Korea, my school provided me with a flat walking distance to work, health insurance, and good pay. They delivered on all their promises, no problems.

Hi: I needed finger print cards several years ago for an educational concern. I looked in the Yellow Pages for the Memphis TN area and found several listings. If you live in a large metro area, you will probably find some company/individual who will do finger print cards. The Yellow Pages listing is under "Finger Printing." John D.
