Hi I am Michelle and I am from India (Kolkata). I have been teaching for the past 22 years. I have completed a TEFL course through Thailand I have a passion for teaching the little ones age groups 3 – 9. However every time I have searched a job site I find out that all jobs are for Native speakers. I am near native English speakers and it is really sad not to be able to find a job. If anyone is able to help me with some suggestions, It will greatly be appreciated.

Hi Michelle, I am wondering if you had an English certification test of some kind from Cambridge or City and Guilds (UK)something that you could put on your CV/resume that shows you have been certified as a "native" or near-native speaker maybe that would help? Just a thought! Good luck, Jill

The basic problem is not the schools. Some schools in various countries may consider hiring you. The problem is that to obtain the correct work visa to teach English you have to be a native speaker or have a passport from a native speaking country such as the USA or UK etc to be able to process the visa. However every country has different visa regulations and some people get around these by working on business visas or student visas. BUT remember that this is illegal and if you do this and are caught you can be fined and deported etc.

Hello Michelle,
The number of people speaking English fluently is greater in India than any other native English speaking country. Its tough to get a job. The schools prefer to have native English speakers. The question is why? Even they would find it difficult to answer. The only solution - Start teaching privately. Wish you good luck.

Hi Michelle, a good friend of mine from Bangalore (Rakshit Jade) was working in Thailand for a number of years for government high schools. He was not paid as much as a ’native speaker’ (more than the Filipino teachers) but after his first years service his pay was increased to reflect his teaching ability. He then moved to a different school and received the same salary as the rest of the ’native English speaking’ teachers. This was in Songkhla, south Thailand. I would also suggest that if you’re passion for teaching outweighs receiving a lessor financial reward than a NES, you could look for employers that are seeking Filipino/Filipina teachers. Best of luck to you. (ps. I currently work in Vung Tau and they have a great restaurant ran by guys from Kolkata!) :)

There’s lots of international schools in French speaking West Africa. Pretend you are half British or born in UK then grew up in India. Indian teachers are quite popular in these schools in my experience.

THere are people working as ENglish teachers from the subcontinent all over the Middle East. They are generally paid less than native speakers, and they often have Master's or even doctoral degrees. If you have a Master's degree in English, try Jazan University in Saudi Arabia. The pay is lower than other places in Saudi, but the cost of living there is much lower and it is a nice place to live.
