Anyone considering teaching in China - if you are over the age of 55 your chances of being hired are not good. Visas are no longer being issued for anyone over the age of 60 - no matter how long you have been in the country.

It depends on where in China you are Michael and also how much 'power' your school or recruiter has. I'm 60 and still going strong and last year at my school they hired an American aged 62. The more remote areas will hire over 60, for example Inner Mongolia, but that's if you're already in-country. The 60 age limit is for those from outside China, so yes, if you're outside China your chances are slim over 60.

I know a few people over the age of 60 that are working in China. Now they are not working on the correct visa but it is possible. I wouldn't risk it but some of these people are great teachers and they even work in government schools. You can try maybe if the school you want to work with has Guanxi you could the correct visa. If not they may have you work illegally.

Then, on the other hand, China does not have a Constitution and Bill of Rights including the Equal Employment Opportunity Act and Commission to back it up. It is illegal to discriminate in America in regards to age. I just received a doctorate degree in education in 2013 and have government loans to repay, therefore, I will need a job in education as a teacher or administrator. If you can't get a visa over the age of 60, does this mean that they're trying to hold people hostage--which is breaking international laws of the United Nations. I have never been sharper at any time in my life than now. Evidently, if they don't want to hire, then it's just not at THEIR best interests and it's THEIR lost. They lose out on experienced, mature, dedicated employees. My assumption is that it is expected for those who are still committed and dedicated to the profession of education at that age, to start their own schools and educational organizations.

There is always an exception to the rule. I am over 60 and had been invited by some key universities in China and some other institutes linked with the Chinese Academy of Science to give lectures on special topics there. In Guangdong Province, so I was told, youi could still get a legal job at the age of 60 or higher if you hoild a PhD degree. Not really sure whether this is really true. China is no longer an option for me anyway because the pay is too low. And I need no longer to work for earning my living as I am financially independent now. I also would reject any future job offers from China because I don't want to travel half around the world just to end up in a filthy apartment as I did when being hired by Ocean University in Qingdao. Why should I give up and leave my nice small house when to exchange the same for a filthy apartment provided by a Chinese key university? I fell they can't respect foreign teachers that much.

I'm working in Anhui, the first year I was here they asked a man who had been here for 6 years to leave because he turned 60. ("and couldn't get him a visa").. This year, we have a French teacher who they have asked to stay another year and he just turned 60. I think it really depends on so many things, (like how happy the school is, but also ability of the school to manage a visa) but like just about everything in China the time and place will make a big difference.
