Hi everyone, can anyone help me with the definition of a Native Speaker? Is it geographical or probably accent? In Ghana our medium of instruction right from basic to tertiary level is English Language. Some of us proceeded to study English Language for a BA. Degree; can that qualify us a Native Speakers? Somebody who studied engineering and worked as an engineer for almost 20 years was preferred to me for a English Language Teaching Job because of where he came from.

Native speaker means that you speak the language that your students speak though you are teaching them English. For example, if you speak French, and go to Ivory Coast to teach, you as an English teacher capable of speaking French fluently will be regarded as a native speaker. Hope this helps!

Being a Native Speaker of English language is geographical. Countries whose native language or mother tongue is English just as you have your native language in your country. Some of these countries are: UK, USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA and NEW ZEALAND. Most employers prefer Native speakers

Native English speaker (NES) means born in a country where English is the native language. Countries such as Britain, the US, Australia . . . Schools look for NES as teaching involves the use of grammar and those to whom English is not a first language will always struggle with that. Let’s suppose I want to learn to speak French, who would I employ; a French national, or a Russian who can speak French? If not a NES, my advice would be to focus on writing and publishing articles to show your grammar skills, stress the English degree in your resume and accentuate any experience you have, which might get you a foothold in TEFL and build up a reputation.

Well...I would rather say those born, raised with the education completed in US, CA, AUS, NZ, UK, Ireland and South Africa (some parts only)...at least this is the definition given to me some 12 years ago by the NZQA.

Native Speaker refers to the primary language you were raised with in your native land. Your country of birth's mother tongue. This, however, will not always be the primary determiner of placement when looking to teach English abroad. There are many, many other factors to take into consideration, such as the city you choose, the type of institution you prefer, as well as the type of contract you enter into. Natus in Latin means of the womb. Its the language you heard pre birth and after. My daughter was born in Sudan, she is American, all she has ever heard pre birth and after from both her parents has been English, hence she is a native English speaker.

Not.... Those are the PREFERRED locations. I am a native English speaker. My instruction was in English and in fact, our educational system was British. Never ceases to amaze me how preferences end up redefining a concept.

I UNDERSTAND YOUR FEELINGS TOO. THEY ONLY SEE SOUTH AFRICA AS NATIVE SPEAKERS. I THINK THE RECRUITERS IN ASIA COUNTRY HAS LESS INFORMATION ABOUT OTHER AFRICA COUNTRY TOO. JUST IN MY CASE THEY CONSIDER NIGERIA COUNTRY AS IF WE ARE NOT NATIVE SPEAKERS. AM FROM THE SOUTHERN NIGERIAN WE STUDY ENGLISH FROM THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, IS A DAILY TALK IN MY COUNTRY. I AM SO SHOCKED THAT ONLY SOUTH AFRICA IS CALLED A NATIVE SPEAKER. AND SOUTH AFRICA HAS 9 NATIVE LANGUAGES. IT IS WELL.

To get over that hurdle create a great demo real showing off your talents, English skills, and personality. Go on You Tube and search ESL demo reels. some are so badddddddd. But look for a good ones and incorporate that into your demo reel. Actors have the same problem, head shots, demo reel are how they audition for parts. Face it you are auditioning bring out the charm, smile, enthusiasm, Good luck. Rehearse with a friend. shoot it with your smart phone. You should see my demo reels, yes several sending more is better. Good luck, Vinny

Actually the meaning of native speaker means that only the British or Irish are native speakers. Native means where did the language originate from. Americans, Canadians, Australians etc............... are not native speakers. English is their first and or only language. However people now like to refer to native speakers as being from those countries. Native Indians are exactly that - native to North America as in thats where they are from. Amercians today are not native to North America. Hope this clarifies the true meaning.
