No visa, no work. Visa is being processed, am I permitted to continue employment?

So long as they have your forms and are processing them you can work, but if your visa does not get approved you must stop work. And it depends on the visa that you are applying for...you can only work on a work visa, so the company you are working for should be the one to provide the visa.
