Regualte this industry.

If you dont have a REAL EARNED TEFL certificate (especially for non-natives). Please get out the industry. A degree in Astrophysics means very little and hurts the credability of those who did get one...

My advice: ask the crocodiles near your home!
Being a native speaker does not automatically mean that you are qualified to teach. In China, we have already seen too many of those young, heavily beer drinking people with drug addiction problems teaching Chinese students sentences in sub-standard English such as "I ain`t gonna home", etc. Better such people would get out the industry, and for those teachers like our dear colleague Richard Best, I have one dream that I mhope would come true: A bit more of brain before posting such statements.

Obviously people with personality should be a requisite....oops I guess that leaves you out!!!!!!

Hi! Mr.Best,
This is a site which has to share information in the senario of education so that experience of one can travel to the different parts of the world to bring oneness and also under one roof. This is not a site for personal attacks and please, don´t be so prejudiced against the non-native speakers, there might be better people than you on the other side of the world. If possible, try to help those who need you and your suggestions rather than shunning them from the industry as you have said it....

Mr. Best,

I don´t want to be rude, but perhaps you should learn how to use the space bar....or how to use prepositions.

I expect many non-native E speakers take more care (than you do) with regards to punctuation!

If you want to complain about credentials, show that you care.

Richard;
I understand the point that you are trying to make (even with your horrible spelling and punctuation), but it doesn´t mean that having a TESOL or TEFL certificate guarantees you as being an excellent teacher. It´s all about the passion one has for the job, the joy of sharing our language with others from a different culture, and ultimately, making a difference in their lives. Some foreign countries do discriminate unfairly, choosing only people with 4-year degrees (whether it be in Astrophysics, Biology or English) and not considering their other qualifications. They sometimes end up with teachers who have no interest in teaching, especially to children. I am a Special Needs Teaching Assistant in Canada (with a TESOL certificate), but many places in the world will not accept my credentials, including my own country.
I hope one day, that will change!

There are teachers holding TESL degrees who have no idea how to teach, and there are teachers with over 10 to 20 years teaching who know more about teaching ESL than some TESL teachers.
Getting a quick ESL training does not make you a better teacher..its only an opening for those without teacher training.
You must consider the individual teacher not simply the ESL certificate.

There are some excellent teachers around that are actually better than some of the teachers with ESL certificates.
Good Employers also look at faces and people they hire..and having certificates do not necessarily mean ´good teacher´.
Get Real....

Not knowing how to spell credibility would also hurt the credibility of those who got a TEFL certificate. Don´t gets an apostrophe. B minus.

Three cheers for Dr.Schmidt! When I retired as a lawyer, I could only think of being a teacher or professor.WOW! I was in for a big surprise. 99% of so called English Teachers here in Germany were nothing more than native speakers. I was really aghast when I realized that teaching at one of those franchise schools was nothing than a business, and the quality of a teacher did not matter.Experience and diverse educational criteria is a joke for most schools. Now I freelance with a thriving business. I have two employees and two freelance teachers to whom I outsource my A1 or A2 students. When I see jobs advertised offering 800E per month as wages, the question arises;are they joking?

IMHO, they are joking. Theirs is business, not really education!

blah blah blah. It is regulated, by the employer! they choose who they wish to employ, & if they decide that a degree in Astrophysics suits their needs, then that is their decision, not ours (or yours)

Is there any teachers that I could join from NZ with interests in teaching children English ,traveling to see the tourist sites, and interested in a cooking school to learn about ethnic food.

Truth is always in the middle, so that Richard you are very young and you have to learn many things, not only about Astrophysics.
