ABOUT BECA: BECA exists to provide quality, affordable bilingual education to the educationally disenfranchised while fostering meaningful cultural exchange. BECA’s model is more than an international teaching program; we distinguish ourselves by the breadth and depth of our community engagement, our dedication to fostering long-term relationships with our communities, and our commitment to ensuring that our BECA teachers are trained and supported to unleash the amazing potential of their students and to learn from them and their families. In the 2016-17 school year, one of our long-time dreams came true - we hired a BECA graduate as a teacher! Now, half of our teaching team at each school is made up of BECA graduates, and the other half is international volunteers.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: BECA invites international volunteers to join our volunteer teaching team each year, supporting both elementary and middle school students at 2 local schools, San Jeronimo Bilingual School and Santa Monica Bilingual School. At a high level, each volunteer teacher is responsible for: leading an English curriculum for students in grades PreK-9 in ELA, Science, Math, Art, PE and Computers (all classes are capped at 25 students, and most teachers take on one full curriculum for a grade level) supporting fellow teachers in the classroom, getting to know your students and their families, and immersing oneself in Honduran culture. Don’t worry - we’ll be there to support you with every step along the way!
Prior to arrival, international volunteers will have 2-3 virtual onboarding calls to prepare for their time in-country. The initial weeks in-country are spent embarking on a summer-long training program that teaches you: the BECA curriculum, classroom management, and so much more. Once the school year begins, BECA teachers receive ongoing professional development and training throughout the academic year.
REQUIRED DUTIES:
Facilitate relationships with students’ parents and other community members
Plan lessons and teach in English (all subjects with the exception of Social Studies and Spanish)
Foster a safe and productive classroom environment for students
Periodically serve as a Lunch/Recess monitor
Collaborate with the teaching team (Honduran and International) on school projects, events, planning, and curriculum development
Contribute to the collaborative and respectful group living experience
Serve as an ambassador for BECA by helping to spread the word about our work to your families and friends
Participate in professional development events, such as local education-based conferences, and BECA-lead efforts
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree by June 2024 (all majors welcome to apply!)
Candidate with an Associate’s degree may be considered, and are encouraged to apply
A commitment to BECA’s mission and a dedication to social justice
Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills
Capacity to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Willingness to operate in a low-resource environment under challenging living conditions
Bonus points if you…
Have experience with AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, or other international (or domestic!) teaching programs

BENEFITS: All BECA volunteer teachers receive…
A monthly food stipend
Local transportation to/from the airport
Housing (within a shared living accommodation)
High-speed internet, and all utilities, provided by BECA
Assistance in obtaining temporary residency status, or support with obtaining a temporary VISA, depending on volunteer need/local regulations

TEACHERS WANTED IN Honduras
Honduras (Gracias)

Fields of Expertise: ESL/EFL , Elementary , ESL to Children , FIELDS MISSING
Details: WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORK WEEK LOOK LIKE?
Teachers arrive at school around 7:00 a.m. and leave around 3:00 p.m. It is normal to spend at least a portion of each week doing lesson preparation outside of school, as teaching is a truly-demanding (yet gratifying) job.
ISN’T IT DANGEROUS TO LIVE IN HONDURAS?
Gracias is actually considered by many to be the safest town in all of Honduras. The homicide statistics that people read about exist primarily because of gang-to-gang violence in the bigger cities like San Pedro Sula.
HOW MUCH IS THE MONTHLY SALARY FOR INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS?
Pay is dependent upon education/experience and will be discussed during the application process. Nevertheless, every teacher is paid more than enough to cover his or her daily expenses.
WHEN DOES THE SCHOOL YEAR START AND END?
Teachers generally start working the first week of August and finish the third week of June. We also hire several ESL teachers each year to teach from January–July for a program called “Nivelación”, which exists to raise the English level of new students.
WHAT IS THE LIVING SITUATION LIKE FOR TEACHERS AT MINERVA?
Teachers are welcome to live wherever they choose, but free housing is available at “SAHER”, a beautiful apartment building/hotel owned by Minerva, which finished construction in 2016.
WHAT IS THE RATIO OF HONDURAN TEACHERS TO INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS?
It varies from one year to the next, but the ratio of Honduran teachers to international teachers is about 3:1 during the typical school year, with a combined total of about 30 staff members.
DO I HAVE TO KNOW SPANISH TO WORK AT MINERVA AND LIVE IN GRACIAS?
Most international teachers cannot speak Spanish when they arrive, and they quickly learn to get around just fine. However, if you do speak Spanish already, your adjustment to Honduras will be even easier!
WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO TEACH AT MINERVA?
Teachers must have either a bachelor’s degree or a TEFL/TESOL certification; applicants with alternate professional experience that demonstrates appropriate competency will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
